EILEEN O'BRIEN - (1925-1986) Journalist.
Born in Galaway, only child of Helen and Prof. Liam O'Briain; educated at UCG. She worked as a reporter on provincial newpapers in Ireland and England and with the Irish News Agency in the fifties and was Belfast editor for the Irish Press and PRO for Gael-Linn for a short period. In 1965 she joined the Irish Times, where she wrote a weekly 'Irishwoman's Diary' and ' A Social Sort of Column' and became Irish-language editor. Her republican sympathies were strong but did not impair her integrity in reporting on troubled times in Belfast and giving a voice to many who thought no-one wanted to listen.  She died, unmarried, in a Dublin hospital on 1 January 1986.
