Born in Dublin, educated at UCD and King's Inns. Called to the bar in 1913 and practised for some years becoming professor of national economy in 1930, and held the joint chairs until his retirement in 1961. Published Economic History of Ireland (three volumes, 1918-21), which broke new ground and has not yet been superseded. Served for some years as Government nominee on the board of the Abbey Theatre, and represented NUI in Seanad Eireann 1948-65. Served on many Government commissions on economic affairs and on the committees of the Statistical Society, RDS, and RIA. In addition to many contributions to learned journals his published work included 'An Essay on the Economic Effects of the Reformation" (1923), "Agricultural Economics" (1929), and " The Four Green Fields" (1936), a penetrating study of the problem of directorships of Guinnes and other commercial concerns, and he was a member of every leading club in Dublin. The brilliance of his lecturing drew undergraduates from other courses, and many of his former students remained his friends for life. He died, unmarried, in a Dublin hospital, 31 December 1973. |
