Born Carnelly House Co. Clare, 29 June 1842; educated Clongowes Wood College and TCD. Called to the bar 1865, Attorney-General 1888. Largely responsible for administering A.J. Balfour's Crimes Act (1887); a coercive measure designed to repress attempts at winning Irish freedon. Became known as "Peter the Packer' as he was accused of packing juries. Made Lord Chief Justice 1889; baronet 1891; raised to the peerage 1900. Died Stillorgan, Co. Dublin, 7 September 1914. |
