Born Kilrush, Co. Clare, 7 March 1847; educated Catholic University, Dublin. Called to the bar 1874; English bar 1875. Gave up his practice and took to literature and politics. Editor of the "Speaker" and contributor to leading reviews. One of the founders of Irish Literary Society, London, and president 1906-11. LLD from NUI. Published many historical and biographical works, including lives of Thomas Drummond, Parnell, Russel of Killowen , and John Bright, and an edition of the 'austobiography' (diary) or Tone. Died at his home at Kensington, London, 17 March 1918. |
