Born in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, and joined the staff of the "Clonmel Nationalist". As a junior reporter he carried despatches for the IRA and was a friend of Dan Breen. A visit by a travelling company awakened in him a love of opera, and music became his lifelong passion. He spent his annual holidays visiting Covent Garden, London, and later La Scala, Milan, and collected a library of thousands of records. For forty years until shortly before his death he broadcast a weekly radio programme, "Your Choice and Mine", which became immensly popular. His relaxed style and infectious enthusiasm created a countrywide awareness and appreciation of classical music. He was edidtor of the Clonmel Nationalist for some years and was twice amateur billiards champion of Ireland. He died in a Clonmel nursing home on 24 Febrauary 1988. |
