The S. S. Samaria,
from Ireland to Boston, July 17 1882
The "Samaria" of 1884 was built by J & G. Thomson, Glagow in 1868 for Cunard SS Co. She was a 2,574 gross ton ship, length 320.6ft x beam 39.5ft, clipper stem, one funnel, two masts (rigged for sail), iron construction, single screw and a speed of 12 knots. There was capacity for 130-1st and 800-3rd class passengers. Launched on 4th Jul.1868, she started her maiden voyage on 29th Sep.1868 when she left Liverpool for Queenstown (Cobh) and New York. Her last Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston - New York sailing started 7th Mar.1871 and on 18th Apr.1871 she commenced Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston direct sailings. In 1878 she was re-engined by J. Jack & Co, Liverpool and commenced her last Liverpool - Queenstown - Boston voyage on 30th Jan.1896. In 1902 she was scrapped at Genoa. [North Atlantic Seaway by N.R.P. Bonsor, vol.1, p.150]
