The Boru Festival in Armagh
The Boru Festival in Armagh will take place from the 6th - 8th of June 2003 in Armagh City. Beginning with a Gala Banquet in the new Armagh City Hotel on Friday evening of the 6th. We have also planned a Living History re-enactment of Boru's gift of gold to the cathedral church on the hill of Armagh. This will take place in the ancient Market Square in Armagh and will involve living history re-enactors from all over Ireland and school children from both Clare and Armagh.
The centre piece of the weekend festivities will be the performance of Maurice Lennon's 'Brian Boru High King Of Tara' in the Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh. We are planning a high profile concert with invitations going to the President, a member of the Royal Family in Britain, politicians, other dignitaries and of course Lord Inchiquin as chief of the O'Brien Clan.
On Sunday various events will take place around the city and at Navan Fort, ancient capital of Ulster and site of Boru's encampment during his visit to Armagh in 1004 AD>
We have already forged very strong links with Clare county Council, Shannon Development and other interested parties from Killaloe, Cashel, Clontarf and Tara. Indeed, in October we hosted representatives from these areas in Armagh as part of the 'Boru in Armagh Project'. There was much enthusiasm surrounding the June event but with over the next decade. One such project is 'Boru's Royal March', designed for the overseas visitor it is a luxury coach tour of sites/places associated with Boru. For example visitors landing at Shannon airport will visit and have one or two night stays in Killaloe, Cashel, Dublin (Clontarf), Tara and Armagh completing their visit by flying out of Belfast. etc etc. |
