A Brat, Veil, and Pouch

 

I. The Brat (Celtic Cape)

This anciend garment is the one you see all the Apostles wearing the Books of Kells, Durrow and Lindisfarne, and is best made from a heavy, rough fabric such as wool or lines, or from fur.

Measure from your shoulder to the floor and inscribe a semicircle of this radius on the fabric as in a circle dress using string, a pin and a pencil. Do not fold fabric- use only one thickness.

Cut out semicircle and hem all edges.  Trim to taste.  Wear by placing center point of straight edge at back of neck and draping material over shoulders and arms.   Pin at throat with the largest brooch you can find.  Look grim.

II. Veil

Cut a circle of very light weight material and give it a narrow hem.  Place on head with edge just over the eyes.  Hold in place with a circlet (not metal unless you have an Award of Arms or higher) around the brow or crown.

 

III. Pouch

Cut a circle of fabric 18" in diameter and give it a half inch hem.  On the right side, cut a 3/8" slit in the edge and through this run a thong or cord around the tube formed by the hem.  Pull it up tight for the neck of the pouch.
